Department: Advertising

Position: Outside Sales Representative

Classification: Full Time

Basic Requirements:

  • At least 1 year outside sales and/or marketing experience strongly preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to sell and effectively close sales;
  • Proven track record of sales achievements;
  • Proven self-starter with the drive and initiative to develop new business;
  • Must be goal-oriented, self-confident and enthusiastic;
  • Ability to establish rapport and develop credibility with new accounts;
  • Familiarity with the Internet; knowledge of Internet marketplaces and the features and benefits of the Internet vis a vis other media, especially print;
  • Knowledge of or experience in the advertising or media industry helpful;
  • Ability to grow business through cold-calling mandatory;
  • Willingness to learn basic technology concepts to explain product offerings;
  • Willingness to work in emerging product line and contribute to product development, sales strategy and operational issues;
  • Required personal characteristics include tenacity, patience, a sense of humor, and a strong desire to win against the competition;
  • Strong computer skills: MS Office, specifically Word, PowerPoint, Lotus Notes preferred;
  • Excellent time management and strong presentation skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Reliable transportation (automobile ø leased or owned).

General Responsibilities:

  • Sales planning ø overall responsibilities for each account in your territory;
  • Maintaining records and reports as required;
  • Keeping up-to-date with industry trends, trade journals, etc., as they pertain to your clients and category;
  • Preparing and making sales presentations;
  • Servicing accounts properly;
  • Selling online services to account list; grow account list within assigned territory; meet sales goals;
  • Becoming an expert in advertisersÕ online needs; communicating those needs to category manager to ensure that they are addressed in ongoing product development, sales strategy, and operations;
  • Representing The Washington Post to advertising community in a professional manner; participating in industry events and other outside functions as needed; becoming The Washington Post online expert within the industry;
