Doris Jean Hurd Savoy
District of Columbia Public Schools
Mrs. Savoy is a Spanish teacher at Calvin Coolidge Senior High
School. She has taught in the District of Columbia Public School
system since becoming an educator in 1968. Mrs. Savoy began
her career teaching Spanish at Calvin Coolidge, moving to Hine
Junior High School in 1972 and Rabaut Junior High School in
1973, where she also taught Spanish. She returned to Coolidge
as a Spanish teacher in 1986. In 1991, she was the recipient
of the Walt Disney Outstanding American Teacher Award and in
2001 she appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show as one of the outstanding
teachers in America. In 2004, Mrs. Savoy was among six area
educators selected as The Washington Post/Japan Fulbright Memorial
Fund Fellows to Japan. She received a bachelor of arts degree
in Spanish and education from Morris Brown College in Atlanta,
Ga.
