Robert M. Murphy
Alexandria City Public Schools
Mr. Murphy is an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher
at Francis C. Hammond Middle School. He began his teaching
career abroad, in 1990, as an ESL instructor at St. Xavier’s
School in Kathmandu, Nepal where he taught for two years. In
1992, Mr. Murphy returned to the United States as a program
assistant for Jesuit Volunteers: International, interviewing
candidates for international volunteer positions as ESL teachers.
From 1995 to 1998, he continued his global travels as an ESL
instructor and preparatory department coordinator at Üsküdar
American Academy in Istanbul, Turkey. In 1998, Mr. Murphy became
an ESL specialist in the Kwajalein School system in the Marshall
Islands. One year later, he moved to the College of The Marshall
Islands, where he held the position of ESL instructor. Mr.
Murphy assumed his current position in 2000. He received a
bachelor of arts degree in history and a bachelor of science
degree in secondary education from the University of Scranton
in Scranton, Pa., and a master of arts in teaching English
as a second language and bilingual education from Georgetown
University in Washington, D.C.
