

Contributions Program Guidelines
Application Process
The Washington Post accepts, but does not require, the Washington Regional
Association of Grantmakers Common Grant Application format. If you do not wish
to use this format, your application should consist of a proposal cover sheet,
an application letter on letterhead and supporting documents, as described
below:
I. Proposal Cover Sheet (one page) that includes:
- Organization name
- Organization mailing address, telephone number and FAX number
- Name and title of proposal contact person
- Brief statement describing organization and its purpose
- Brief summary of proposal
- Total cost of project or program (if applicable)
- Amount requested from The Washington Post
- Previous funding (if any) from The Washington Post
- Other specific sources and amounts of support for proposed project or program
(please note if committed or pending)
- Date of submission and signature of executive director or board president
endorsing the proposal (Proposals from schools must have the signature of
the principal.)
II. Application Letter (3-5 pages) that includes:
- A brief description of the organization and the scope of its current activities
- A statement concerning the need for the program, project or activity
- A statement of the objectives of the program or project — specifically
what it is intended to accomplish
- A brief description of the activities to be included as part of the project
or program and the timetable for their accomplishment
- A statement concerning the overall cost of the project, the amount of funding
requested from The Washington Post and the amounts, sources and status (committed
or pending) of additional support for the project or program
III. Supporting documents that include*:
- A copy of the organization's current IRS determination letter, indicating
the organization's tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code
- A project or program budget, including sources of projected revenues and
purpose of expenses*
- A copy of the organization's current annual operating budget, including
revenues and expenses
- A list of the organization's board of directors and officers, showing business,
professional and community affiliations
- A copy of the organization's most recent annual report
- A few (not more than three) relevant articles, reviews, brochures, etc.,
about the project or organization
*Proposals from schools are required only to submit the project budget.
